Twister was released into theaters on May 10th, 1996. Filming locations include Pilot Mound, Ia. and Kaw City, Maysville, and Wakita, Ok. It was directed by Jan de Bont. The lead of Bill Harding was played by Bill Paxton, who has been in a plethora of great films through the years. Some of which include Aliens, Near Dark, Nightcrawler, Predator 2, The Terminator and Tombstone. Sadly, he passed away on February 25th, 2017. After his death, Spotter Network choreographed 200 storm chasers to spell out "BP" with their GPS tracker blips on a radar display to honor him. This kind of tribute had only been done five times before, and it was the first time it had been done for someone who wasn't a storm chaser. The score was composed by Mark Mancina. The films first DVD release was on March 26th, 1997. It was one of the first movies ever released onto digital video disc.

Aunt Meg's house - Apache St. and Elm St. Wakita, Ok. 73771

The house is no longer there because it was actually destroyed in the film, as were other houses on the same street. Warner Brothers, looking for an authentic looking Oklahoma town it could tear up, found Wakita after it applied for a demolition grant to help it recover from a devastating hail storm two years prior. The storm had dropped grapefruit sized hail through the roofs and windows of Wakita's homes and businesses, and many uninsured vacant buildings had sat deteriorating, ever since. The movie studio offered to do more than $100,000 worth of demolition work and said they would clean it all up when they were done. They used the materials from the tear downs to fill five blocks of Wakita with waist-high debris, making the town look like it'd just been devastated by a tornado. There are actually homemade red stands that are part of Wakita's "Twister Walking Tour". The town also has the Twister Movie Museum, located at 101 W. Main St.

The Outsiders

The Outsiders was released into theaters on March 25th, 1983. Filming locations include Owasso, Sperry and Tulsa, Ok. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola is one of the most well known and respected directors of all-time, directing films like Apocalypse Now, Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Godfather trilogy. The film was adapted from S. E. Hinton's 1967 novel of the same name. Hinton makes a cameo in the film as a nurse. The movie stars a number of future a-list actors, many in their feature film debut. Heather Langenkamp, of A Nightmare on Elm Street fame, also makes a small appearance in the film, although it's a deleted scene. In the poster for the film, the Greasers are shown laughing as Johnny is smirking. This was a candid shot, taken during the photo session in which the actors were supposed to look tough at the camera. What happened was, Leif Garrett (Bob, the Soc) was approaching the food table off-camera, and a stagehand said "Hey Leif, don't dig in yet. Save that for the actors." Then Ralph Macchio said "Yeah Leif, save that for the actors." This comment cracked up the cast, and the photo was used. The score was composed by Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's father. The films first DVD release was on November 30th, 1999.

Rush (1991)

$

Rush was released into theaters on January 17th, 1992. Filming locations include Freeport, Houston, Humble, Kemah and Richmond Tx. It was directed by Lili Fini Zanuck. It was the only feature film directed by Zanuck, who also had a very successful career as a producer. Jason Patric, who was in The Lost Boys, four years prior, played the lead of Jim Raynor. It also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, who was in The Hitcher, five years prior. Greg Allman, of The Allman Brothers Band, played the films main antagonist. Rush is a gritty, realistic look into the world of the 1970's drug trade and I personally think it's a great film. It features an amazing soundtrack, with longs like All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix, Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd and I Fall to Pieces by Patsy Cline. It's most notable song, however, is Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. Clapton wrote the song in honor of his four year old son, Conor, who had died tragically on March 20th, 1991 when he fell to his death from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment building. Overall, Clapton contributed ten songs to the films soundtrack. The films first DVD release was on December 3rd, 2002. Also, a huge thanks to Craig Busch for helping me find most of the locations from the film.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

The Hills Have Eyes was released into theaters on July 22nd, 1977. It was filmed near Apple Valley and Phelan, Ca. It was directed by Wes Craven, in what was his 3rd film. Craven directed the films sequel as well, in 1984. There was also a re-make in 2006, which was surprisingly a very solid film. Dee Wallace played the part of Lynne Wood, in what was her second film role. Wallace would go on to star in genre films like Critters, Cujo, Halloween (2007), The Howling, The Lords of Salem and Popcorn. It also stars another genre veteran, Michael Berryman, in what was his third film role. Two years prior, Berryman was in Oscar Best Picture winner, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Producer Peter Locke played the role of Mercury. The films Art Director was Robert A. Burns, who had worked on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, three years prior. Some of the props from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were reused to decorate the cannibal clan's lair. The score was composed by Don Peake. The films first DVD release was on September 23rd, 2003.

Doug fights Mars - Hutch Rd. Apple Valley, Ca. 92307

At the time of filming, this area was incredibly desolate. And while it's still not exactly a hotbed of activity, a few houses do exist now, far below on the desert floor. The easiest way to get to the location is to drive up to it via Hutch Road, although, this won't happen unless it's by four-wheel drive. The other option is a roughly one and a half mile hike (one-way). Once you reach the area where filming took place, it's a matter of scurrying around the mountainside in order to pin point particular shots. For some reason, one of the shots in the film (see screenshots below) was flipped.

I'd like to thank Justin Scarred of Randomland Adventures for finding this location.

Married...with Children aired on Fox from April 5th, 1987 to June 9th, 1997. Title sequence filming locations include Chicago and Deerfield, Il. The series was created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt. It ran for eleven seasons and consists of 259 episodes. Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy) is the only cast member to appear in all 259 episodes. Seasons one and two were taped at ABC Television Center in Hollywood, seasons three through eight were taped at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood and seasons nine through eleven were taped at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City. The shots of the expressway in the title sequence were actually re-used from the movie National Lampoon's Vacation, as the Griswolds' green family truckster can be seen driving. It's theme song was "Love and Marriage" by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen, performed by Frank Sinatra. It's first DVD release was on October 28th, 2003. And just in case anybody didn't know, Al Bundy once scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High Panthers in the 1966 city championship game vs. Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, "Spare Tire" Dixon.

At the time of filming, it was a Joe's Crab Shack. It remained a Joe's Crab Shack until 2020. At the time of my visit, it was a Bishop Cidercade. The patio area is mostly unchanged, other than the railing and the river walk that was built adjacent to it. Downtown Austin, which has grown considerably in size over the years, is visible in the background.

Ape City - 1925 Las Virgenes Rd. Calabasas, Ca. 91302
(Malibu Creek State Park)

Ape City was a set constructed at Century Lake. There are no traces of the set today and the area where it stood is now mostly overgrown. The easiest way to reach the location is via High Road trail, which is about a 1.3 mile hike one way. About a mile past Century Lake are the M.A.S.H. filming sites. Also, next to the first parking lot of Malibu Creek State Park is the rest room that was seen near the beginning of Halloween H20. Malibu Creek State Park is a great place to visit for outdoor enthusiasts as well as movie location hunters.

Tourist Trap was released into theaters on March 16th, 1979. Filming locations include Calabasas, Los Angeles, Malibu and Santa Clarita, Ca. It was direct by David Schmoeller. Ten years later, Schmoeller would go on to direct Puppet Master, undoubtedly Full Moon Productions' most successful release. Both Tourist Trap and Puppet Master were executive produced by Charles Band, who founded Full Moon. The film also had two Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) crew alumni. Robert A. Burns who was the art director and Ted Nicolaou who edited the film. The films villain, Mr. Slausen/Davey, was played by Chuck Connors. Connors is probably best known for his role in the television series "The Rifleman". In the end credits, Mr. Slausen is misspelled as "Slauson". The very unique score was composed by Pino Donaggio. Some other films scored by Donaggio include Beyond the Door, Carrie (1976), Don't Look Now, The Howling, Raising Cain, Seed of Chucky and Two Evil Eyes. The film had a reported budget of $800,000 of which one-sixth of it went toward Donaggio's salary. The films first DVD release was on July 28th, 1998.

I'd like to thank PaulH of Halloween Filming Locations for finding these locations.

Oscars - Sierra Hwy. and Rush Canyon Rd. Santa Clarita, Ca. 91390

The structure had been there since at least 1948. It was either removed or demolished by October of 1980. It has been a vacant dirt lot ever since, mostly used as a parking area for trucks hauling their atv's and dirtbikes, which they ride down Rush Canyon Road. At one point it was called the Hob Nob Cafe. It was during this time that it was used as a filming location for an episode of the television show The Fugitive, titled The Devil's Disciples, starring a young Bruce Dern. At the time of filming Tourist Trap, the "Oscars" sign seen on screen seemed to be authentic, as it had been owned by Oscar Newman.

Waterfall - Off of* Latigo Canyon Rd. Malibu, Ca. 90265
(Escondido Canyon)

Thurlow Orin McCoye purchased 180 acres in the canyon in 1959 with the intent of turning it into a botanic garden. He planted fruit orchards and a garden of tropical plants. In the late 60's and early 70's he grew and sold Christmas trees on the property. In 2013, the property was purchased by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Today, a portion of the road that leads down into the canyon is part of the Ava and Cole Weintraub Trail. In 2018, the Woolsey Fire, which burned a total of 96,949 acres, obliterated the entire canyon. When I visited the location in March of 2021, almost all of the remaining trees were charred black. However, much to my amazement, the area was quite overgrown with foliage, just two years removed from the devastating fire. I can only imagine how overgrown it was prior to the fire. The swimming hole seen in the film has since been filled in for the most part, over the years. Comparing the water level then to the ground level today was quite a contrast. Only a small puddle of water was present at the base of the waterfall when I visited. There is a gate at the entrance to the property, which looks like it has been there for about 150 years. The best way to reach the waterfall is by parking off of Latigo Canyon Road, in a small turnout, opposite the side of the entrance, and hiking down into the canyon from there.

Church - 2813 Cornell Rd. Agoura Hills, Ca. 91301
(Paramount Ranch)

In 1927 Paramount Pictures purchased 2,700 acres of the old Rancho Los Virgenes to use as a movie ranch. For twenty-five years the ranch thrived as a filming location for hundreds of television shows and movies, mostly westerns. In 1952 Paramount Pictures had to sell the ranch due to changes in the studio system. The ranch found renewed life as a filming location when William Hertz bought the southeast portion in 1953. An ardent fan of western movies, he built a permanent western town utilizing Paramount Pictures' old prop storage sheds. The Paramount Raceway opened a year later, however it was closed after just eighteen months due to two fatal crashes in December of 1957. Most of the track still winds through the grass and oak woodlands of the park. After purchasing a portion of the original Paramount property in 1980, the National Park Service revitalized the movie ranch. Some notable productions hear over the years include American Sniper, Bone Tomahawk, Death Race 2000, Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman, The Great Outdoors, House II: The Second Story and Van Helsing among many others. Sadly, the 2018 Woolsey Fire nearly wiped out every structure on the ranch with the exception of the train station and church used for the filming of Westworld. Representatives have stated that the intent is to rebuild the ranch in it's entirety by 2021.

Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is a 932-acre park located in the San Pelona Mountains in northern Los Angeles County. The unique rock formations were formed by rapid erosion during uplift about twenty-five million years ago, and then later exposed by uplift activity along the San Andreas Fault. The rocks are named after Tiburcio Vasquez, a Mexican bandido from the 1800's, who used the rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 22nd, 1972. At least sixty-five movies have been filmed at the location, a few of which include Alpha Dog, Army of Darkness, Austin Powers, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, The Flintstones, Galaxy Quest, Planet of the Apes (2001), Short Circuit and The Ten Commandments. Over one-hundred television productions have been filmed at the location, with the most well known being the original Star Trek series. At least thirty music videos have been filmed at the location as well.
